Question: How do I know what foods are vegetarian at restaurants?
I eat out a lot, but now I’m switching to vegetarian. How hard is it to eat out being a vegetarian? I’m worried about hidden animal ingredients.
I especially love Chinese. If I get tofu and veggies, can I be fairly certain that is vegetarian?

Ask, ask, ask!
Usually, that Chinese dish is safe, but you can never be too certain. In Asian foods, ask if they have added fish sauce, oyster sauce, fish oils, etc. In all soups, ask if they used beef, chicken, or any other kind of meat broth or stock. In Mexican food, the beans often have lard in them.
If the server isn’t sure, ask them to ask the chef. Most restaurants are very helpful.
I often have to order things that aren’t actually on the menu. I just find foods that are on the menu and combine them. Or I will order a pasta or salad without the meat.
