How do I substitute things to make into a vegan recipe?

Question: How do I substitute things to make into a vegan recipe?
I have a recipe that I use to love when I wasn’t vegetarian :/
It included gravy and chicken. I have a recipe for vegan gravy, but if I use tofu will it taste good?

I’m still kind of new to making all types of vegan things, even though I’m vegetarian but want to be a vegan.

So the real question is would tofu taste good with gravy? And if so, can you bake tofu in the gravy?

In my experience, trying to make meat dishes that I used to like into vegan dishes never yielded as much success as making dishes that were vegetarian in their own right. If you want to try it though, you might try to use morningstar Chik’n strips or Quorn patties, they are a little firmer and closer to real chicken texture.

Not sure about the tofu + gravy but maybe you could try using seitan. It works well as a meat substitute in recipes and has a texture close to meat.

Some of the meat analogs offered by companies like morning star are not vegan, a common ingredient is eggs as a binding agent.

You’d need to bake the tofu separately. It won’t bake well if it’s covered in gravy. Gardein has good fake chicken. I don’t know if tofu will cut it. http://www.gardein.com/. There’s a store locator on their website to see what stores near you sell it.

Also, if a dish is supposed to be chicken like, use poultry seasoning. It’s just spices, but it will help replicate the taste you liked.
