How do vegan actors deal with food in scenes?

Question: How do vegan actors deal with food in scenes?
Such as eating food and snacks in a scene…Do they bring their own vegan versions or what? I am curious.

They could, and probably do, but some actors eat and spit. Uncle Rico in Napoleon Dynamite is a vegan and he had to ‘eat’ steak in a scene, but you can see him spit it out really quick in his hand. Real casual, so I do know they do that sometimes.

I am a vegetarian and I was in a play that took place at thanksgiving dinner and I just didn’t eat the meat they had.

But there is a lot of soy food that looks very real.
And I am sure the actor could ask the director if they could eat something like fruit or veggies in the scene.

I’m going to come at this from a different slant. And that is you can politely decline any role that requires you to do something that you find offensive or whatever – regardless if that is for nutritional, religious, moral, physical, etc. Or simple find out if there is another option for the scene. But keep in mind, that the ‘other option’ may not be possible, and you, as the actor, either have to just deal with it, or just walk from the role. I would hope that before productions has even started that you would have been aware of the script and all of its actions, so that any objections could be voice well prior to filming. But it really may come to down to either you do the action (eating, kissing, whatever) or being fired from the set.
