Q&A: So has anyone ever told you that ramen noodles are white trash?

Question: So has anyone ever told you that ramen noodles are white trash?
My mom is visiting and looking through my cupbord like she always does, she found a stash of Ramen noodles unopened and went on to tell me they are for white trash, and if she catches me feeding her 2 year old growing grandson that crap, she was going to whop me in the head. He has had them once at the baby sitter’s and she told me that he loved them, so I bought one of those 6 packs, just never got around to using it.

Do your kids like them. Is there such a thing as “white trash food”? Why would she consider them bad? The sodium is bad, but I don’t have to use that packet, so are they really bad on occasion or what?
Bahaha K. Nail on the head. Gotta love her though.

My husband eats ramen still. It is quick and easy to cook, if he’s hungry at 2 am he knows he is on his own to find a snack. Who cares if they are healthy or not? Cheapo ramen is no less healthy than feeding your kids chips or cookies as a snack. There is nothing wrong with having unhealthy food once in awhile.

“I will whop you in the head” = white trash…

Yes, they’re bad. I mean, they’re food, and they taste good, but — nutritious? No. On par with potato chips, just starch and grease.

I would send Grandma off to the store to get some buckwheat soba noodles at six bucks a packet; might as well take advantage of the silly butting-in.

  • KARMA:

No, to me they were a dorm room staple. I won’t touch them now.

Well people with little/low income generally buy them because you can get a box of 50 for like $ 2. Lots of broke college students also eat them.

They are just fillers basically, no nutritional value, just something to fill your stomach.

My kids have never had them but I am sure, since they are junk, they would like them.

  • Jax's Mommy:

I have heard people say that. It’s because they are so cheap. If the kiddos like them, go for it.

Tell her, “Mom Grow up. Remember when you were a parent? You try, fail, learn and then grow. So why don’t you back off and let me do the parenting?”

Now, they are NOT white trash. I took them to lunch as a child and so did every other 100 people in my small ass school. I still eat them and do a lot of everybody else in this world. Sure they are not healthy for you. But I would NOT be a judgemental freak either. (:

The trash from my Ramen noodles is orange and silver. I like the chicken flavor.

I stick chicken breast in with them once in a while, but usually I just use them for my awesome Asian coleslaw recipe.

Lots of sodium in them, it is true! Love sodium – at least until my hereditary high blood pressure shows up. I’m living on borrowed time, don’t take my sodium prematurely!

In my house, we call it crackhead soup for 2 reasons: They’re so easy a crackhead could make them, and after a crackhead buys their crack that’s all they can afford for food. Not sure who we got that nickname from, but it seems to have stuck around.

In high school, I’d eat the occasional pack when I got home from school to fill me up for a bit & keep me warm until mom got home to make dinner. I still keep them around for when I’m sick, for some reason I’d much rather have Ramen than chicken noodle soup.

Yummy! I LOVE Ramen noodles (I just don’t eat them anymore ’cause I’m a vegetarian). But boy did I eat the heck outta them when I was in college.

I agree with K – Saying “Whop you in the head” is more white trash than eating Ramen noodles. LOL.

With that said, I think Rames noodles are like the cheapest food you can buy, so maybe that’s why they are stereotyped as being trashy? No they are not healthy, but eating them once in awhile isn’t gonna kill him.

Sounds like she just doesn’t know a better way to communicate to you that she would like to see your child fed the best way possible. Making an abrasive comment is certainly not a great way to go about it. It sounds like you’re aware of the high sodium content, otherwise it’s just some curly noodles.
Just tell her you appreciate that she wants the best for her grandchild, and so do you. If she continues to really nag about it, tell her she had her opportunity to be a parent, now it’s your turn.
My Mom remembers what we ate when we were little, (oatmeal creme pies, spaghettios, chef boyardee, not all the time of course;-) so she really keeps out of what I feed mine.
All my kids love noodles of all sorts, a little olive oil, garlic and italian seasonings, or marinara sauce. Especially fun shapes like the little shells or bowties, the multi-colored pastas too.

When I am too tired to cook we call it a “soup night”. My kids love ramen noodles. They are not healthy in any way, the sodium is through the roof. They are cheap and the kids can make it themselves so they are good enough for us every now and then. So I don’t think every now and then would hurt, my kids seem to be ok with it.

  • Devyn A.:

No they aren’t bad, or “white trash food.” Ramen is my comfort food, and it’s what I eat when I’m sick. Cheap, way off brand never heard of food manufactured at china sold at some un-heard-of dollar store is the closest you can get to “white trash food.”

I would have fixed that for dinner that night, if I was you. :) If she had a problem she can get the hell out.

  • happymomof2:

I’m more disturbed about your mom than the Ramen noodles lol. Geeze, it’s none of her business if you eat Ramen noodles once a month, or whatever. Everything in moderation. What does she do when she sees store brand cookies? *GASP*
For the record, Ramen noodles originated from Japan, so more like “oriental trash” so now you can correct her so she can get her sarcastic terminology more politically correct ;)
