Question: What foods can you eat as a vegetarian that give you as much protein as meat?
Considering going vegetarian, and I wanted to know: what foods are there that you can eat as a vegetarian? (besides junk food and fruit and veggies – I already know about those, of course) and what foods give you as much protein as meat, but are vegetarian friendly?

Try tofu. It has the same amount of protein compared to pork (I think).

If you are a male you have to stay away from soy and subsequently tofu.
You could consume legumes as source of proteins.
You don’t have to stay away from soy if you are a guy…….
Other beans and nuts have plenty of protein.
Fish, its not considered meat but has protein
Vegetarians can obtain protein by eating a balance of incomplete proteins each day (legumes with grains or legumes with nuts and seeds) or by eating approximately 50g of complete protein from the following sources: amaranth, buckwheat, hemp seed, soy, quinoa, certain blue-green algaes (such as spirulina) as well as eggs and dairy products for those that allow them.
PS: Soy is fine, for girls AND guys, so long as you don’t over do it. If you have a choice between unfermented soy products, like tofu, and fermented soy products, like tempeh, it’s probably better to go for the fermented variety. The fermentation process drastically reduces the presence of phyto-estrogens (plant estrogens) that are naturally found in soy. There’s some controversy as to whether or not these compounds can cause any damage to the human body, but no definitive results have been found. It’s perfectly fine to eat soy, but to be on the safe side, don’t rely on it as your main source of protein.
Karen — I did add “for those that allow them” after the part about eggs and dairy. Since Sam is aking about a vegetarian, not a vegan, diet, I just assumed there might still be some animal products in there.
Chelsae had a pretty good answer until she got to the animal products. You can’t have eggs, cheese, milk, yogurt, ice cream, etc. No dairy whilst being a vegan since they are from animals.
Tofu, Nuts, Eggs, Beans thats all I can think of right now!
I hope it helped!
Beans beans the musical fruit.
i went to a nutritionist today and actually talked to her about the protein situation.
she says a serving of protein is 1 oz and you need 7 servings a day… so 7 oz of protein.
you can get those proteins from peanut butter, beans, tofu, faux meat, and nuts.
the best option is beans which are very rich in protein.
you can also drink soy shakes which are packed with proteins and nutrients.
if you’re a lacto-ovo vegetarian, milk eggs and dairy are always an option too.
try drinking green smoothies in the morning and adding a little hemp protein powder in them. Eating more fruit and vegs than you are use to eating is the key. Most people that i know who are vegan only eat a small salad. Try eating more spectrum of veg is great way to add protein.
One of the best foods is garbanzo beans (chickpeas), they are high in protein, iron, fiber.
You can take a can of beans, rinse them off. Smash them and make them like you would tuna fish salad. My kids go crazy for that.
Also keeping with lots of grains and nuts and seeds will help you feel full and have lots of protein in them.
quinioa
Soybeans
Spinach
Sunflower seeds
Seitian
Tempeh–shocking amounts of protein. Also tofu and beans. And don’t listen to crazy arab, you can eat soy in normal amounts and be completely fine. It even guards against prostate cancer (if you’re a guy, that is.)
