Fat is so easily regained due to this biological system that wants to return us to our previous fat levels.

While I am sure the biology aids this process, I would argue a lot of fat regain is due to people making short term changes in their life to achieve weight loss, rather than long term life style changes, to achieve perm weight loss and overall health. Fat is so easily regained because we humans want to go back to our previous lifestyle patterns, often the patterns we have had for an entire lifetime, after only a few months or even couple years of change, because we know we like them better.
As with all things though, it is very often a combo of nature and nurture. In order to maintain the weight loss, you have to maintain the behavioral changes, as well as pay attention to the biology. For the biology, wait for it…….. you have to maintain the behavioral and lifestyle changes. The behavior of exercising regularly, of maintaining a healthy diet, of building muscles, create the physiological changes that raise your metabolism and pulls that settle point down. Variety is also good, keep your body guessing. Dont fall into the same exercise routine every day for weeks. Dont eat the same meals every day.
You will NEVER be able to consume more calories than you burn, regardless of what your settle point is. So, trying to get to a point where your body no longer tries to achieve previous body fat levels without maintaining exercise and nutrition, wont matter – you will still have to exercise and eat right to maintain your weight and be healthy.
