HELP! Working Mom, can’t cook, baby almost a year old!! How do you feed your baby?

Question: HELP! Working Mom, can’t cook, baby almost a year old!! How do you feed your baby?
My son just turned 11 months. He’s been eating stage 3 baby food and drinking formula. My husband works nights, and I don’t get off until 6 at night. I don’t have a lot of time, and I don’t know how to cook! What do other working moms do? And could you show me your feeding schedule and how much they eat at once? I have the “Super Baby Food” book, but some of the ingredients I’ve never even HEARD of, and the book pretty much tells you to go buy at least $ 200 or $ 300 worth of food to get started. I can’t afford that! Does anyone have quick, easy, healthy meal ideas? Is there a way to make a bunch of food in advance? Since I don’t get off until 6, it’s going to be hard to find the time to cook. My son goes to bed around 7:30, and we usually don’t even get home from the baby sitters until almost 7! I’m so worried, because it seems impossible to afford all the fancy food that book suggests, and impossible to find time to cook. I do get 2 days off a week, so I can make food in advance, if that’s possible. Please, please, help me!

if i am in a rush…i will sometimes give my daughter a divided plate and put a fruit in one division (bananans, etc) and put some cut up lunch meat in another division, and some cheese or something like that in the third part (if he likes raw veggies…but up some carrots or something as well). she likes it…she can eat it by herself..and its healthy.

I can’t cook for my baby if my life depended on it..?

Question: I can’t cook for my baby if my life depended on it..?
I’m a young mom….and well I’m becoming more and more frustrated to the point that I’m stressing over it so much that I forget to eat or I don’t even notice that I myself have not eaten the whole entire day…because I’m so worried and stressed about what to feed my 10 mth old daughter for breakfast lunch and dinner!

She’s a healthy baby..and she pretty much eats everything I give her….but I want to cook her meals!! REAL FOOD!? For breakfast I give her scrambled eggs w/ cheese, gerber 2nd food veggie, and fruit. For lunch I give her fish that has been steamed at my inlaws restaurant, gerber veggie, fruit. Dinner I give her the same thing……this and that…a slice of kraft cheese…maybe some rice…and then her bedtime bottle.

I can’t cook if my life depended on it…I try to follow step by step EASY directions but once I get started…I have no clue what the heck I have “cooked”….I didn’t even know how to cook scrambled eggs right until my husband told me how to do it!??!?!

Advice please!?!?! On what healthy foods to feed baby!!!…Or anyone know a good site or cookbook that has easy..and healthy and yummy recipes?? I don’t know…I need some serious help……my husband and I always eat out or take out…or get food from the restaurant that we run…and well I want to cook food for my family!!

Q&A: Healthy home cook food for your dog?

Question: Healthy home cook food for your dog?
Do you cook for your pet or buy in store dog food? I hear so many stories how long they live on high quality dry dog food or healthy homemade food. I’m getting confused. I know some pet owners whose dog lived a long time on both. My 4lb Maltese is a picky eater. She has lost and gained weight by only ounce. I know some say they wont starve themselves but mine is really funny. She sniffs everything and walks away. She nibbles on her dry “Solid Gold” food here and there. It depends on the day and her mood. I tried to mix the dry with a little wet, add lil low sodium chicken broth, etc. The doctor gave her “Royal Canin” and she got the runs. Should I try a different brand of food for sensitive stomachs or home cook her meals? If dry food I prefer organic and if cooked “what recipes?” Everyone has there own preference but I still would like to know both sides. Thanks.

I’ve been using Pedigree (I think Purina) for years. I brought home a pit bull from sicily when I finished my active duty career in the military and then spoiled her because I got into the restaurant business and brought her home steak scraps- her health changed rapidly and she got really lazy and obese- I figured that I loved her so why not?

Then, and a vet didn’t need to tell me, I thought I love this dog so why not keep her on a strict diet and keep her healthy, I started getting her plain ole pedigree and sometimes but not often added a little gravy to it. Never too often but just now and then. She lived about 15 years and died healthy and naturally. I hope you understand that last oxymoron. Died healthy…

Anyway, my mom has 2 dogs and feeds them table scraps daily. I’ve warned her that its not nessessary to spoil to show love. They will NOT eat dry dog food and wiat for my mom to break down and give them gravy or prime rib or whatever. Both are fat and lazy, poop all over, and not nice solid poop. This may not help as I have no gourmet dog food or recipes for dogs. As a former military male, this disgusts me. Spoiled dogs AND spoiled children. Anyway, I love my dogs and keep them on a firm diet. I don’t switch because something is on sale.

Another thing I want to tell you that a vet told me herself is that they-vets- sometimes buy stock/ shares in speacialty dogfood or gourmet dogfood co. and push these products on their clients/ dog owners telling them that they are the best foods for your dogs healthy diet- just for their own profit. Think about that!!!

how many americans still know how to cook?

Question: how many americans still know how to cook?
when I go to the grocery store these days there are so many of these “ready-made” or frozen meals where all you have to do is put it in the microwave, or just add water, or something very simple.

i understand that in this day and age many americans are very busy, with both parents working and no time to cook “traditional” meals.

but there seems to me something sad about all these pre-made food. does this mean that fewer and fewer americans are learning how to cook.

i think knowing how to cook your own food, from whole, real, basic ingredients, (in other words, from scratch) is a very important skill.

i am a very busy person, a graduate student…i don’t exactly have lots of free time. yet i still enjoy cooking homemade meals nearly every day…from scratch.

all these pre-made meals just can’t be very healthy – even if they are marketed as “diet” or “health” foods, they are still highly processed. real, natural, whole ingredients are always better.

so what % of americans can cook?
wow, so far I like all the responses I’m getting.

but i guess that was to be expected from posting this question in the “cooking & recipes” section, lol ;)
some people have made some great points and I just want to emphasize them again:
•cooking from scratch is actually more economical than buying TV dinners
•you dont have to cook every single day…you can cook a few dishes per week, but just prepare enough that you can put the leftovers in the fridge or freezer and enjoy them later when you don’t have time to cook

Help with dinner ideas, please–very inexperienced, clueless 16 year old “cook”?

Question: Help with dinner ideas, please–very inexperienced, clueless 16 year old “cook”?
Im 16,and I recently moved in with my dad over the summer and his girlfriend always cooked for us and well, they broke up so basically me and my dad have been living off fast-food so I really need some quick, easy, healthy meal ideas for me and him. I personally have very little cooking experience and honestly this will all be a learning experience so please nothing incredibly complicated.
Thank you
*preferably no pasta
*also we’re really big on chinese and really asian inspired dishes
other than that I’m really pretty open to anything just as long as it’s easy to make because I have school all day and honestly I’m tired and don’t want waste like an hour cooking a dish
*also our cooking utensils are kind of limited so nothing that requires alot of different pots, pans, etc

sorry so many details =[

Can u give more info>like what foods u like and dislike?
ok thanks for the more info..If I were you I would make a list of what dishes you like and look on my fav site . http://allrecipes.com/
Type in what dish you want then look through recipes for ones that got good reviews (at the bottom of each page) and then make a groc list of items u need..then go from there..most asian inspired dishes are easy to cook and take little preparation and cook quickly.. a good wok or nonstick frying pan and pot for rice will suffice. I have found for most of my meats in stir frys I like to season the day before..You can put meat in with light soy sauce in a baggie and it tenderizes it.Be sure when making groc list u include soy sauce, peanut or veg oil to cook in, red pepper flakes if u like urs spicy and a good sweet and sour sauce and hoisin sauce.
