How can I think less negatively about myself?
Question: How can I think less negatively about myself?
I feel guilty for even typing this since people are far worse off than me yet I’m searching to simply feel better. Sorry in advance for that.
Anyway I’m 15 years of age and male.
I’ve suffered from depression since I was 10-11 yet this has gotten worse over the last few months, I feel naturally sad apparently but I feel people at school play a role in my sadness. I’m ugly, for the first couple of years of secondary school I got bullied for being ugly, I had severe acne but most people that age did, luckily it’s cleaned up since but my nose is still covered in blackheads and I get spots occasionally. When I first got acne I was teased for it and often hurt, the teasing continued to happen over parts of me like my teeth, my nose, my eyes, pretty much me as a person. I feel terrible about my looks and for the last year have resorted to wearing makeup, which has resulted in many girls laughing at me or calling me names for doing something that they say only they should be allowed to do, the makeup is just a bit of concealer or foundation, not any extreme eye shadow or lipstick as I wouldn’t wear that to school . I’ve had many more problems which have resulted in therapy and counselling, suicide attempts have occurred but at this very moment I am fine so that is out of discussion. School was hard, I had 1 friend but they went to a different school so I spent my time alone being picked on, teachers never cared. I currently weigh around 5-6 stone, I don’t have a set of scales but my doctor weighed me last week to work out my BMI and he said it was really low, I know nothing about what is the right weight so am not an expert in this topic but he said I should eat much more than I do after taking a survey on my diet. I currently am out of school, I had to stay at home for a while but I’m starting a special school in a mental clinic for children and teenagers in a few days, I should be back at my regular school hopefully in less than a month as I will miss far too many exams and will need to pay to retake them, although I have stayed up to date with my curriculum and done work at home and will there. Long story short my friend was talking to me today and brought up that I was pretty “chubby”, she herself was not skinny nor fat, quite a healthy weight I’d say, though she is very short whereas I’m a bit tall so her BMI was a little high she said once. I asked if I was fat and she said yes, in a friendly way but dead serious. I didn’t think I was very skinny, I was told I needed to gain and hadn’t gained since then but was apparently according to her very large, we’re friends so when she asked if I could show her my stomach I agreed and she laughed and told me to diet, I laughed it off as she would of got offended if I got upset but now I feel huge
my self esteem which was in terrible state, I’ve actually been wearing a balaclava for the last week and haven’t left my house. I’m not asking “Am I fat?” because I know I am, but how can I stop focusing on my fat, my big pointy nose, my messed up teeth, my freckled/blackhead filled skin, etc..? I don’t like myself and my family tell me too stop being like I am or no one will like me. It’s just I feel really insecure and the doctors and pills dont seem to be helping greatly though I hugely appreciate them. I would like some advice to give me a start on working towards being a better person and maybe even being able to show my face in public again? Thanks

I have to do a food preparation presentation in class and I am not sure what to make. I am a vegetarian and I want to make something that is vegetarian. Ideally whatever it is can be made in 10-15 minutes.

Q&A: Do I have to eat grains as a healthy vegan ? How can I make them less boring?
Question: Do I have to eat grains as a healthy vegan ? How can I make them less boring?
I’m a vegan, and I know that we’re always told to eat grains like rice, couscous, quinoa etc, but I find them all so bland and boring. Do I have to eat them? Or does anyone have any tips or recipes to make them more appealing?
Thanks to any answers.
To give me one excuse, you managed to make 3 errors in just a couple of sentences.
1) I am a vegan
2) Grains are vegan
3) Grains are not processed
A little on the dim side huh?

Vegans, did you find that you stayed full longer and ate less after you became vegan?
Question: Vegans, did you find that you stayed full longer and ate less after you became vegan?
I’ve been a vegan for a little over a week now, and I’ve noticed that I seem to feel full a lot longer and I don’t feel hungry nearly as often as I did before going vegan. Perhaps eating whole grains helps, but I don’t know. Have any of the other vegans here experienced this?

What’s the dietary difference between eating more of a low fat food vs. eating less of a fattening food?
Question: What’s the dietary difference between eating more of a low fat food vs. eating less of a fattening food?
Let’s say I have two choices for ice cream- regular and “low-fat” ice cream.
Suppose that the regular ice cream has 100 calories per cup, and the low-fat ice cream has 50 calories per cup.
If you were to eat one cup of the regular ice cream, you would be consuming the same amount of calories if you were consuming two cups of the low-fat ice cream. Yet, in volume, you would be eating half as much.
Does anyone know how this affects weight gain? I mean, if there is more volume consumed in the low-fat items, where does that go if the calories are the same?

a calorie is the amount of energy required to heat 1 g of water in 1 min. something like that (look it up to be sure)
so basically, a low fat food has less calories because it is made with less calories. meaning less greasy stuff for example. in order to do that, and as you pointed it out, the volume must be replaced with something else that is either less or non energetic.
a good substitute is simply water. if you can manage to transform it into a gel-like substance, color it, and add flavor to it, you did your job well.
here’s an example: if you wanted to lower the amount of fat in an ice cream, you’ll have to add less butter or oil and you’ll have to add skimmed milk instead of full milk. this will change the consistency of your ice cream and of course the volume. replacing it simply with water wouldn’t make up for the lost ‘creaminess’. but if you used some types of alguae, or agar, these will turn your water into ‘jello’ with the right flavor. and when blended with the rest of the ingredients, you’ll still get a tasty ice cream without the fat. now of course, this is not easy but the whole diet industry is about fooling your senses into thinking that some things are not what they really are.
now to answer your question: the reason that some foods have less calories than others is because our body can extract less energy from them because for example we cannot digest it.
we do not have the enzyme to digest cellulose so to us, no calories from them. a cow wouldn’t say the same.
and what we can’t digest, we just ‘throw away’. so basically with your ice cream example, you’ll get the water from your ice cream but the rest you’ll just get rid of the normal way. so it wouldn’t affect your weight, it will be gone.

how do i get my 1 year old to eat less baby food and more “table-food”?????
Question: how do i get my 1 year old to eat less baby food and more “table-food”?????
Does anyone have any tips on how i can get my almost 14 month old son off of baby food!! I don’t want to say he’s a picky eater, he’s just not very excited about trying new things! We don’t force him to eat things either, i’ll try something and if he doesn’t want it, then that’s it, I won’t force it on him! I have even tried to let him play with the new food first and then try to offer it to him the next day, and sometimes he wont’ even touch it, (but then he’ll try to eat fuzz or other crap off the floor) I don’t get it, maybe it’s the texture he isn’t used to, b/c he’ll something like bananas out of the jar if it’s babyfood, but then he wants nothing to do with the real thing!!
Thanks for the advice!!!

They have “50% less fat” than their original product. So if one product had 6 grams of fat, their new less fat one would only have 3 grams of fat.

Q&A: Is instant steel-cut oatmeal less healthy/nutritious than traditionally cooked stove-top steel-cut?
Question: Is instant steel-cut oatmeal less healthy/nutritious than traditionally cooked stove-top steel-cut?
So here’s the deal:
I recently bought McCann’s Instant Steel-Cut Oatmeal, and I’m wondering about any possible nutritional differences between the instant and regular stove-top. In case you haven’t seen it, instant steel-cut comes in individual packets and is “cooked” only by adding boiling water, the same as instant rolled oatmeal (i.e. Quaker).
When I asked about instant vs. stove-top rolled oats, my doctor said there are no significant nutritional differences, but since the main health appeal of steel-cut is the coarse grain, it doesn’t seem possible for the finer ground instant to be as nutritious.
I can’t find much info about this, so any help is appreciated!

Answer by Holly
The rationale for consuming steel cut oats rather than rolled oats (beyond the fact that the former taste really good) is the lower glycemic index. It is my understanding that in the rolled oat category, it is better to eat the long-cooking variety rather the instant for the improved fiber load and lower glycemic index. While I do not understand exactly how instant steel cut oats are processed and how much the glycemic index is affected by processing, it is safe to assume that the old unprocessed steel cut oats are still best.
I always prepare 4-6 servings of the steel cut oats at one time and warm up a serving when needed to avoid having to wait 30 minutes to cook them. My rule of thumb: the less processing for any food product, the better it is for me.

the answer is no
the food u eat does not only contain fat but also proteins and carbohyderates etc even these contribute large part of calories in the food u eat so only by redusing the fat by 50% the food does not become 50% less fattening.
